How to Measure for Straight-Leg Pants

A good pants comparison starts with a pair you already enjoy wearing. Choose trousers with a similar rise and intended fit, fasten them and lay them flat on a smooth surface.

Check the waist

Gently smooth the waistband without pulling it. Measure straight across, then double the result to compare with a waist circumference in the table. An elastic waist may have a range rather than a single measurement. Do not assume a numeric size label is the exact waist measurement.

Compare hips and leg room

Measure across the widest part of your reference pair and double it if the listing uses a hip circumference. A relaxed straight leg may offer more room through the thigh than a slim pair. Waist fit alone cannot tell you how the rest of the garment will feel.

Distinguish overall length from inseam

Overall pants length runs from the top of the waistband down the outside seam to the hem. Inseam runs from the crotch seam to the hem. They are different measurements: do not compare an inseam from your own pair with a listing labeled simply “Length,” which describes overall garment length in our tables.

Check the rise and your shoes

A higher waistband changes where the hem lands even when the overall length looks similar. Compare with a pair worn at the same height on your waist. Think about the shoes you plan to wear and whether you prefer a clean hem or a little fabric resting on the shoe.

Use the table for the specific style

Measurements are shown in inches with centimeters alongside. Allow the stated manual measurement tolerance. If you are between sizes, compare the waist, hips and length together and contact us if you need help reading the table. Avoid ordering from body weight recommendations alone.
